WP4: Planning a network of MPAs

Co-ordinator: Stelios Katsanevakis (UAegean)

Task 4.1:
Socio Economic evaluation of marine ecosystems

Responsibles: Euripides Papadopoulos & Vassiliki Vassilopoulou (HCMR)
The main aim of WP4 is to:
  • assess the value of particularly representative goods and services rendered by the important habitats / species in the Aegean, and the cost of their degradation under Directive 2014/89 / EC establishing a framework for MPA.

The valuation of the total value of goods and services of ecosystems in the Aegean region which have a major effect, and the cost of their degradation, resulting from the benefit reduction scenarios in key economic sectors and social welfare of the pressures on marine ecosystems. This will provide input for task 4.2 and 4.3.

Task 4.2: Spatial planning in the Aegean

Responsible: Prof. Stelios Katsanevakis (UAegean)

A systematic conservation planning approach (MARXAN with zones), will take into consideration the protection of ecological features of conservation importance and essential fish habitats, important areas for fisheries, as well as the impact/cost of additional fisheries restrictions. Planning will focus on defining permanent as well as dynamic MPAs.

Task 4.3: Spatial planning in Cyprus

Responsible: Antonis Petrou (ENALIA)

The same approach will be followed, as in the Aegean Sea (Task 4.1).

Task 4.4: Stakeholder perceptions

Responsibles: Nadia Papadopoulou & Chris Smith (HCMR)

Stakeholders, especially locals that are affected by the implementation of restrictions, are a key element for a successful establishment of an MPA. Taking into consideration all stakeholder groups views (and in particular those that profit from the sea, e.g. fishers, tourists/tourist operators) and the general public, while proposing changes in the protection status of any selected area, is essential and in the framework of the project, stakeholders’ views and suggestions will be collected, evaluated and incorporated in the planning decision.
